Plug-in Quad Comp

Multiband Dynamic Processor

Multiband processing is a very powerful way to gain control over the entire spectrum of a band, which allows you to process only a selected part of the audio. This is achieved by using filters that divide the frequency range into separate bands. In this way processing affects only one selected track, while the others remain unchanged (if desired). This part of the treatment is critical as the nature of the filters used for frequency separation is essential to achieve a transparent and natural sound separation of the tracks, where the crossover points do not generate artifacts.

As its name suggests, Quad Comp is a multi-band processor that incorporates up to four full-featured Opto-type compressors, each operating in a separate, user-defined frequency range.

Each compressor has a complete set of controls that allow you to handle the compression in the range it is applied to to achieve the desired result.

The flexibility of this processor is also enhanced by the selectable tilt of the filters which can be as wide as 6 dB/Oct or as steep as 24 dB/Oct, for maximum separation.

Even at the steepest slope the filters used in the Quad Comp always sound natural and musical, so the processing applied to each track does not suffer from phasing issues.

The ability to compress each track separately allows you to tame unwanted peaks in a selected part of the audio spectrum, only if and, when a defined limit is exceeded. The ability to adjust the compression ratio and time constants independently for each track provides extreme flexibility and accuracy. The solo and mute buttons make it easy to test how the compressor is working on the selected track.

As an Opto type, the compressor on each track has a gentle compression , very transparent and no side effects, but more aggressive results can be achieved if the threshold and ratio are set accordingly.

Use of this processor is very wide: combining gain reduction with frequency control it can practically act as a "dynamic equalizer", as the gain reduction applied in each band depends on whether the level of this frequency has exceeded the defined threshold.

Most of the time it is on the master stereo bus of a mix, where there is a need to control or even out possible problems with certain frequencies at selected points in the program; it is also very useful on many other individual tracks where frequency content can vary dramatically over time and may need to be under control, such as vocals or bass.
